CLUB CARRAWAY at SEMPLE MANSION

A BRIEF HISTORY:
The Frank B. Semple House and Carriage House are located at 100 W Franklin Avenue in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The house has 19,073 square feet on a flat urban lot. The building was originally constructed as a residential mansion for Frank and Anne Semple and their family. The majority of the third floor holds The Grand Palladian Ballroom, the largest original residential ballroom in Minnesota. In fact, the Semple Mansion is thought to be the largest mansion in the state for that time period. In 1899, construction began on this three story mansion in the Second Italian Renaissance Revival style. Because in those days it was common to travel to Europe to curate materials and have them shipped back to the states, it is possible the fireplace mantel in the Grand Foyer for instance, dates back to the 1700's.
 
Frank Semple was one of the founders of the largest hardware house in the Northwest. He died in February of 1904. His funeral was held in the Semple Mansion Grand Foyer. He was 53 years old and only lived in his Mansion for three years. The home continued to be a private residence until 1935 when it was acquired by Ministers Life and Casualty Union. In 1954, it became the headquarters of the United Cerebral Palsy Foundation of Greater Minneapolis. In 1961, it became the office of the Franklin National Bank. It was during this time the bank built a large vault in the basement. The historic vault and original vault door now serve as a Wine Grotto in the mansion. The bank operated in the Semple Mansion until purchased in 1996 by the African American Family Services.
 
In 2005, the Semple House was purchased by the current owners. Immediately, the company began restoring the house to its original state. The mansion serves as home to CLUB CARRAWAY. In addition, the Grand Foyer & original Ballroom are now special event spaces which are large enough for wedding ceremony and receptions. Every year since it's opening in 2007, The Semple Mansion has been an award-winning venue through Minnesota Bride Magazine.
